In trying to process life's ups and downs, some of us may NOT be fully present to how we arrived at where we are today. Coaching is all about finding ways to help individuals and groups understand the mechanisms behind life experiences, and build on one's ability to generate fulfillment & peace of mind independently.
In coaching, we want to take a look at our own personal systems. These are systems that help us operate through our day-to-day lives. These could be systems that we are aware about, others not so much.
There are individuals and groups that may even have a completely unique understanding of their own systems, and coaching can be an opportunity to calibrate and build on these just as well.
One of the most important parts of the work is harnessing our ability to codify what we know and what we learn. Some of us may have been privileged with life experiences that have resulted in significant levels of success, but we may not know, or be fully present to how we got there. We just know or feel that there mechanisms behind them that we may not fully understand yet. Similarly, our relationship with our challenges and obstacles, and how we maneuver around them follow the same mechanism.
Coaching includes a process of breaking all these down to a level that is understandable and codifiable. When done well, we have the power to apply the same journey of success and fulfillment again and again, especially in areas of our lives that matter to us most. More importantly, we have the power to pass it along for others around us to also break through.
A coach is most effective whenever there is an identified challenge or gap in pursuing an objective or goal. To illustrate, in the sport of golf, a coach can be very instrumental for a competitive golfer that needs to understand his stroke and approach to the game in ways that the golfer cannot achieve independently. This is the same in a coaching session beyond sports.
Similarly, a coach has little to no value to someone without an objective or goal (where the coachee is also NOT committed to identify an objective or goal to unpack or process). In the same light, a coaching session can be life-changing for someone who --while may express difficulty in identifying an objective or goal ---is committed to explore and pursue one.
Absolutely.
100%! What happens in the coaching session stays in the coaching session.
Many clients find that coaching is best conducted in person. That said, virtual coaching sessions are also known to be very effective, and in many cases seen as the preferred option for individuals and groups, depending on their learning styles and comfort levels to engage in in-depth discussions.
The time that your coaching process will take depends on the complexity of your goals and your commitment and openness to your process. Though, a common duration of a session is an hour. In some cases less, in others more.
